28, 1946; Brooklyn, New York... an aspiring musician opens his eyes...
Mark's musical composition career began in 1975 with the TV series, Starsky and Hutch and
has taken off since then. Although he is best known for his work on The X-Files, he has
made music for many other programs. (see filmography) His talent is music was most
probably given to him by his mother, a pianist who taught music; and his father, a
professional percussionist. He took piano lessons at age ten, and by the time he was
twenty, had mastered both oboe and percussion. He studied music at New York's Art and
Music High School, and met Michael Kamen (now an Academy Award winning composer). The two
went on to Julliard (an elite music school) and became roommates. After studying at
Julliard, he became very fond of pop music, and with Michael Kamen and atleast 3 others
they formed the New York Rock'n'Roll ensemble. The band was signed to Atlantic Records and
he toured and recorded with them for 5 years.. and then he found his interest lie in
writing film and television scores. He began to write and relocated to Los Angeles in
1974. He now has 112 film and TV scores, and he isn't stopping there. His current projects
include the sixth season of The X-Files TV program and Millennium, also a TV program.
Mark's Musical Preferences...
Mark has been known to listen to music from all areas, but loves rock. He enjoys music by
artists such as Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morrisette, Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, Nine Inch
Nails and the Dust Brothers. He also enjoys the work of other film composers like Michael
Kamen, Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Moriconi and John Barry. He really should listen to MOIST...
